ARTHUR’S favourite Birmingham City Football Club claimed victory at the second annual Arthur Cup.

The Blues went head to head with Solihull Moors on Saturday (July 8) to kick off their pre-season matches at the ARMCO Arena in memory of murdered youngster Arthur Labinjo-Hughes.

Despite a valiant fight by the Moors to retain the cup, Lukas Jutkiewicz’s 29th minute header settled a 1-0 win for Blues. The match stopped in the sixth minute and the stadium erupted in applause to remember six-year-old football fan Arthur who was brutally murdered in Cranmore Road in Shirley in 2020.

A third of all ticket revenue and monies raised at events being held at the Damson Parkway stadium off-field will go to charities, including the NSPCC who work with at-risk children in Birmingham.

Speaking to BluesTV post-match, head coach John Eustace said: “We are really grateful for the support – it is a fantastic charity we are raising the money for.

“We have the Arthur’s Area at the Stadium and we are right behind this cause. The turnout of the fans was awesome and the money raised is fantastic.

“It is a great event. Solihull Moors are a great team, with a really young exciting manager coming in with Andy Whing, so it is going to be tough games coming up in the next couple of years.

“Hopefully, we can keep playing Solihull and keep raising lots of money for charity.”

The amount raised had not been released by organisers at the time of going to press.

The Arthur Cup was set up last year between the two clubs last year to help local charities.
