PCC’s anger after police ‘double up as prison officers’

THE WEST Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner has hit out at the government after the force was asked to house 44 prisoners in custody cells.

Simon Foster (pictured) says the request is ‘truly remarkable’ as the move would put extra strain on police officers across West Midlands Police.

Mr Foster said: “The public want their police officers out in communities preventing and tackling crime, not having to double up as prison officers, because this chaotic government has failed to get the basics right and has failed to plan.

“Police custody units were built for people who have just been arrested. The facilities are not meant to handle prison inmates.

“The fact police officers will be asked to look after these prisoners will put an extra strain on the force at a time when its focus should be on keeping our region safe.”

Last year the government announced it had asked to use 400 cells, following a surge in overcrowding in male prisons and youth jails.

The Ministry of Justice gave the National Police Chiefs’ Council 14 days to make cells in the north of England and West Midlands available.
