RUGBY LEAGUE - Midlands Hurricanes relocate from Portway to Alexander Stadium

Solihull Editorial 7th Jan, 2023   0

MIDLANDS Hurricanes rugby league club have moved from Portway to the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham ahead of the 2023 season after agreeing a partnership with Birmingham City Council.

Hurricanes, who play in Betfred League 1, finished eighth in their maiden season under their new name and have left Portway to play their home matches on the community pitch adjacent to the main Alexander Stadium.

The club hope the move will allow the sport to grow in the Midlands area through community outreach and gives Hurricanes the option to explore avenues of wheelchair and women’s rugby in the future.

Greg Wood, Midlands Hurricanes CEO, said: “It has been a long road, however, it is fantastic to finally say officially that Hurricanes have a new home.

“I can’t wait to see the lads running out for the first time on the field with a full venue in a impressive setting. It’s now our mission to make the Alexander stadium our fortress.”

Mike Lomas, Midlands Hurricanes Chairman, added: “I’d like to thank Greg and his team for their hard work over the last year for making this opportunity possible.

“I’d also like to extend my thanks to Birmingham City Council and the Alexander Stadium team for their co-operation in enabling us to establish a fantastic platform for Rugby League in the Midlands.”

Hurricanes will initially play home games at the warm up arena with the playing surface on the main pitch not ready for the 2023 season due to the impact of the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the opening and closing ceremonies.
