Firing up the Mighty Compton for concert

Solihull Editorial 26th Sep, 2022   0

THE Mighty Compton will be fired up once more as the local branch of the Cinema Organ Society gets ready for its next concert.

Taking to the stage will be Dorian Collins from Worcester for a live concert on the afternoon of Sunday, October 2

Doors open at 1.30pm, with curtain up at 2.30pm. Admission £10 on the door, including interval refreshments and parking.

Dorian studied classical piano from the age of seven and graduated to the church pipe organ aged 16 studying at Malvern Priory.

During his playing career he spent time abroad most notably as musical director for the singer and pianist Buddy Greco in the USA.

The organ is also available for individuals to play, by arrangement.

The Mighty Compton is a cinema pipe organ built in 1935 by the John Compton Organ Company and was first installed in the Tower Cinema at West Bromwich.

It entertained cinema going audiences there until its removal in 1965.

Purchased by the Society, it was then installed in the recreation suite of Marston Green Hospital, then at St. Martins School in Solihull before its last move in 2002 to its present home at Fentham Hall, Marsh Lane, Hampton-in-Arden, B92 0AH where it now rises from the stage in true ‘Blackpool’ fashion.
