A SOLIHULL-BASED choir is set to light up the stage tonight at the Opening Ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Pop Voices will be taking centre stage at the Alexander Stadium as part of a 1,000-piece choir which has been created especially for the show.

The choir based at Solihull ExtraCare Retirement Village is involved in a community spirit project run by B:Music at the Birmingham Symphony Hall and it’s from there they were asked to take part.

Director of Pop Voices, Anya Small, said: “We are a community choir and Solihull Village is very much a community in itself.

“We have been lucky enough to have some members of the retirement village join our singing community too.

“We are all very excited and privileged to be part of the Commonwealth Games and this piece of Birmingham’s history.

“We have been rehearsing hard for the Commonwealth Games and recording, but the songs are top secret at the moment.

“I can’t say much but we may even be performing with a big name.”

Pop Voices was formed in 2013 for people who love to sing.

There are no auditions needed to join the choir and organisers say the focus issolely on the enjoyment of singing and making friends.

Choir member Helen Gamble said: “Our choir loves singing together every week at Solihull Village.

“The café is perfect for a cuppa before the rehearsal.

“Our choir leader, Sarah is always upbeat and encouraging and we all enjoy ourselves and come out smiling.”

To see Pop Voices in action tune into BBC One from 7pm.
