SOLIHULL Council has been ranked as one of the lowest in the country for food waste recycling.

In 2020-21 Solihull recycled 0.7kg of food waste person according to data collated by Solar Centre, a company which sells solar products in the UK.

This ranked the borough as sixth lowest with Shetland was ranked the lowest with 44grams food waste recycled per person.

Topping the scales was Antrim and Newtownabbey Council in Northern Ireland with 190kg of food waste recycled per person.

At present Solihull Council does not offer food waste collection as part of its recycling services.

The green, garden bin, specifically states not to include food waste on it.

The Council’s website does suggest residents can compost their food waste and has a link to a website to buy a compost bin.

However, Solihull Council has said food waste recycling collection is on the cards.

A council spokesperson said: “The Council’s new Strategic Environment Contract – which starts next month – includes the delivery of waste and recycling services.

“This includes the provision of food waste collections, however a start date for food waste collections is yet to be agreed.

“It will form part of an overall review of the council’s waste collection strategy.”
