Crocheting craze brings a riot of colour to town's high street

HENLEY in Arden high street is a riot of colour this festive season thanks to an outbreak of ‘tree art’.

Devised by a group of residents, the open air exhibition started as yarn bombing back in 2016 before morphing into something just a little bit more sophisticated.

“One of the residents, Melanie Suthons-Hart came on board last year she taught us all to crochet,” said organiser Annie Davies.

“Before, the trees were decorated with knitted scarves and things, but we did some videos and people learnt to crochet and now it’s something more akin to tree art as we now have some really sophisticated designs.”

Trees have been decorated by both individuals and groups, with the local branch of the Royal British Legion doing one festooned in poppies joined by a similar decorative tribute from the WI.

“I think we have 28 trees in total with some sort of covering on them and it adds a real splash of colour to the high street,” said Annie.
