CELEBRATIONS were in order as Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikers handed over their 13,0000th delivery.

Volunteers drivers have been working round the clock since 2012 transporting urgent samples of blood, Covid, human tissue and urgent medical supplies through their volunteers across Warwickshire’s network of hospitals.

Martin Williams, a trustee and volunteer at Blood Bikes made the momentous delivery from Warwick Hospital to the NHS Blood Transfusion centre in Birmingham.

The Liaison Officer for the all the hospitals served by the Blood Bikes said: “We never know how many jobs will come in on anyone evening.

“Some nights we can have up to 10 or 12 calls and others just one or two.

“I was delighted to be there to fulfil the 13,000th job.

“We are bound to adhere to strict patient confidentiality and never really know the facts for each job.

“What we do know is the basic content of what we are transporting and whether or not it is urgent.

“I would say 99.9 per cent of our jobs are urgent by their very nature and by volunteering we are truly ‘riding to save lives’.”

The charity has more than 100 volunteers who step up at all hours of the day and night seven days a week, including bank holidays.
