Solihull Methodist Church goes net zero on carbon emissions

Solihull Editorial 3rd Dec, 2021   0

A SOLIHULL church has taken the next step to becoming a little greener by going carbon neutral.

Solihull Methodist Church made the decision to go net zero by offsetting its carbon dioxide emissions after seeing other environmental projects thrive.

The Blossomfield Road church says it has paid to offset the 11 tonnes of carbon dioxide produced by the church in the year up to August 31.

The church says they expect other years to be around the 20 tonnes mark and it was low last year due to Covid restrictions in place. Richard Balmer, convenor of the church’s green group, said: “If someone dumped rubbish into a river we would be appalled.

“Dumping CO2 into the air isn’t yet seen the same way at all, but the principle is the same.

“Both cause environmental harm.

“I’m wondering if other churches and organisations are yet thinking along the same lines as we are?”

Since 2009 the church has run a recycling service for its members and the users of its premises, for some of the many items not yet collected by Solihull Council including batteries and medication blister-packs.

The church has gained three Environmental Awards, and has embarked on a steady programme of improvements including improved insulation, double glazing, LED lighting and time and movement sensitive controls.
