Shirley man thanks optometrist for saving eye sight

A SHIRLEY man thanked his optician for her quick-thinking which saved the sight in one eye.

Robert Massey said he could not thank optometrist Cassandra Kendall enough for her professionalism and care after he sought her help at Scrivens Opticians and Hearing Care on Union Road.

The 55-year-old wanted a second opinion after he had been told his latest vision problems were down to a previously diagnosed cataract.

He visited Cassandra and while carrying out checks she was able to diagnose a detached retina, where the thin layer at the back of the eye becomes loose, which needed to be quickly to stop it permanently affecting his sight.

She referred Robert to Birmingham Eye Hospital where he had an operation within a couple of days.

Robert, who works in prosthetics making arms and legs, said: “It was a very worrying time but Cassandra reassured me and acted quickly. When I had the surgery I was told that if I had not been referred I would most certainly have lost the sight in my right eye.

“I cannot thank Cassandra enough for all her help.

“She is the best healthcare person I have ever come across.

“She is the ultimate professional and even called me a few days after my appointment to see how I was.”

Cassandra has been an optometrist for nearly 30 years. She said: “I did not think Robert’s symptoms sounded like they were due to his cataract so after I did all the normal checks I carried out extra tests to find out the cause.”
