Super fundraiser Joyce smashes £200k barrier for Macmillan

A CANCER survivor from Solihull has raised more than £200,000 for people who need the support she once benefited from.

Joyce Rothschild initially feared the pandemic might restrict her ability to fund raise but thanks to the generosity of people across the UK and beyond – and a record number of entries – she raised a record £22,459 from just one event – her annual Christmas quiz.

“I know that Macmillan and all other charities have been hit hard by the lack of fundraising during this global pandemic, so we are particularly delighted that our annual fundraiser has not been negatively affected and, if anything more people may well have taken part than usual,” said Joyce.

The 65-year-old first started raising money through her popular quiz 24 years ago while recovering from chemotherapy for breast cancer.

For the first three years, the money was funneled to the Cancer Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital but for the last 20 years, she has chosen to back Macmillan Cancer Support.

Thanks to everyone who took part in this year’s quiz, and her friend Yasmi Roberts who helps her with the quiz every year, she has now raised £206,020 since it began all those years ago.

“Yasmi and I are delighted with the amount we have raised this year,” she said.

“People have been really generous in their donations and in circulating the quiz to their friends and family.

“We have had more entries this year than ever!

“It is a huge amount of work but seeing how much pleasure it brings to so many people makes it all worthwhile. My thanks to my old schoolfriend Yasmi. – We make a great team!”

Macmillan fundraising manager Jayna Kawa said: “Thanks to Joyce and Yasmi we are able to continue providing vital physical, emotional and financial support for people living with cancer at a time when they need it most. We cannot thank them enough.”
