PLANS to extend the natural burial ground in Temple Balsall have been approved.
It comes after Solihull planners have given the scheme, which will see about six acres of green belt land turned over to Temple Fields Cemetery, the thumbs up.
A spokesperson for the cemetery said there was a growing interest in people choosing a natural burial ground for their loved ones rather than the more formal traditional cemetery with a headstone.
“Many people find it is the right thing to do these days, to bury the ashes of a loved one and plant a tree to remember them by instead of having a headstone,” she said.
The new area will be used solely for the ashes of the cremated and no buildings are permitted on the site.
Natural burials, otherwise known as green burials or eco burials, are growing in popularity.
Furthermore Temple Fields Cemetery, which is privately owned and run, is not be restricted to any particular or specific religious denomination.
No headstones are used but there is the option to mark individual graves with small plaques and “the planting of locally native trees.
The cemetery is just off the Kenilworth Road less than two miles from Knowle.
