THE LEADER of Solihull Council has welcomed the government announcement that face coverings will be mandatory in shops and supermarkets from July 24.
Councillor Ian Courts said: “If face coverings will help us all feel safer exploring our local centres, then I’m glad they will be made a mandatory requirement.
“The World Health Organization’s (WHO) advice says non-medical face coverings should be worn in public where social distancing is not possible.
“As I’ve said in the past, my wife and I wear them, and have been doing so for some time, especially if we intend to go anywhere indoors.
“I believe wearing a face covering is about thinking about and caring for others.
“It is less about me protecting myself and more about me trying to protect you.”
He added that local businesses would need residents’ support as they start to reopen, to help the borough’s post-pandemic recovery.
He said: “Now Solihull is open for business, shops, hairdressers, bars and restaurants have been welcoming customers back, but they want to see you too. Please, do think local and support local.”
