Joyce launches 23rd annual quiz for Macmillan Cancer Support - after raising more than £180,000

FORMER Solihull breast cancer patient Joyce Rothschild is launching her 23rd annual 100-question quiz in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support – after raising more than £16,800 last year.

Joyce was diagnosed aged 40 with two children under 10 and, following her recovery, helped to fund equipment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham to show gratitude for treatment she had received.

Her unusual approach to fundraising took the form of researching and writing the brain-teasing quiz – and she has continued every year since.

Last year, money raised from quiz entry fees and donations reached a whopping £16,805 – another record-breaking result.

The total amount Joyce has raised so far over 23 years is an incredible £183,485.

Macmillan Cancer Support pays enormous tribute to Joyce and her supporters for their long-standing commitment to helping the charity meet the needs of cancer patients and their carers.

Joyce, a retired schools advisor for Solihull Council and her husband, Mark, set the 100 questions for the quiz, and they have devised a different theme for each of the eagerly awaited contests.

Her friend, Yasmi Roberts, keeps the administrative side of the venture in good running order. They are already working on new ideas for the next quiz.

Joyce, the recipient of a British Empire Medal in 2017 and a British Citizen Award, said: “I am lucky to have so many people who continue to ensure that good results are achieved.

“They give their generous backing not so much for the chance of winning the first prize of £35 but for the pleasure they say they get from taking part.”
