Christmas is underway as Shirley lights switched on

Solihull Editorial 3rd Dec, 2019   0

SHIRLEY was turned into a winter wonderland as the annual Christmas lights illuminated the town centre.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to see the lights being officially switched on and brighten up the dark nights leading up to Christmas.

There was plenty for all to enjoy as the Solihull Rock Choir and Haslucks Green Junior School choir performed to the crowds and Santa rode into Parkgate on his sleigh.

Around 700 people turned out to watch Solihull entertainer and fundraiser Malcolm Stent turn on the Christmas lights.

The event was organised by Friends of Shirley Park and Shirley Lions Club on behalf of the Shirley Marketing Group.

Helena Morrissey, chair at Friends of Shirley Park, said: “I am so proud of the efforts of all the wonderful volunteers who worked so hard to pull this whole event together.

“There were a few sleepless nights in the run up to the big day – but it was all worth it in the end.”

Martin Conlon from Shirley Lions Club said: “On behalf of Shirley Lions I would like to thank Helena and all at Friends of Shirley Park for their hard work in getting this event back on the calendar.

“It was a great success and we really enjoyed bringing Santa and ‘Shirley Lion’ along to see all the children.

“Looking forward to next year already.”
