Knowle residents help clear park's pond so ducks can swim without litter

AFTER watching ducklings swim in a pond of litter in Knowle Park, a determined resident set out to give the area a clean.

Claire Burroughs took to Facebook in a bid to rally the troops to help clean up the pond and create a nicer place for the ducks and people to enjoy in the Lodge Road park.

A six-strong team turned up with nets and rakes and cleared four bags of litter including a wig, a knife, broken glass and a child’s bag.

Claire said: “People love going there to see the ducks and their babies.

“Unfortunately so do groups of people taking drugs. We found the packets and lighters thrown in the pond. There is a bench next to the pond which they sit on and throw their rubbish in the pond.

“I was inspired to clear the pond after seeing a duck sitting on a nest in the middle of the pond with crisp packets, I felt so sorry for it and seeing the ducklings swimming around plastic bottles upset me.”

Claire donned a pair of waders and made her way into the pond. She hopes to be able to increase her band of volunteers for the next time.

She wants to make the place more attractive with the possibility of adding water lillies and other plants into the pond.

She also wants to fix a poster board and put up information about what to feed the ducks.
