PLANS to build a new training facility for dogs at Birmingham Dogs Home have been handed to Solihull Council.
The Catherine-De-Barnes-based dogs home wants to create a behaviour unit and training paddock in a bid to increase the likelihood of difficult or untrained dogs being rehomed.
The dogs home’s application say the facility would consist of a building with eight kennels and associated external runs, access corridors and an office.
The training paddocks are said to be bound by a fence to reduce interaction between the dogs in the main kennels and the behaviour unit.
The home on Catherine-De-Barnes Lane opened in 2015 after plans were approved by planning chiefs at Solihull Council to build on the greenbelt.
The application claims the plan also meets the ‘special requirements’ set out for development in the greenbelt as it will improve the likelihood of rehabilitation and rehoming rates.
It is described as the first phase to alter and extend the site.
Further developments could include a training barn, enhanced veterinary services, amendments to staff and storage facilities and improvements to paths, gardens and car parking.
The second phase would be subject to a separate planning application.
Birmingham Dogs Home says it provided care and support in 2017 for 2,793 lost and abandoned dogs, with 1,556 of those being found new homes.
The planning application will be considered by Solihull Council in the coming months.
