AFC Solihull reach Birmingham Vase last eight

Solihull Editorial 22nd Nov, 2018   0

AFC SOLIHULL booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Vase for the very first time in their history with a 3-0 victory over Bulkington.

With changes made and several players missing, including skipper Tom Reynolds, Solihull played without a recognised centre half and this showed at times during the first half as they struggled to deal with Bulkington’s direct style.

A number of corners and long throws at every opportunity caused problems in the Solihull box but no clear cut chances came and it was 0-0 at half time.

Disappointed with their first half performance Solihull showed signs of improvement in the second and within 15 minutes found themselves 2-0 up with two quick-fire goals.

Firstly, Andy Matthews hit a curled effort from outside the area which went in off of the post.

Shortly after Jon Hamer fired in a free-kick from the edge of the area for a two-goal cushion.

Solihull were now comfortable and there was still time for Matthews to add a third goal, firing an effort across goal into the far corner.

Late on Bulkington had a chance of a consolation from the penalty spot but blazed it over to keep Solihull’s clean sheet in tact.

Up next for Solihull is a trip to Enville on Saturday for a Les James Challenge Cup quarter-final clash.
