Barons remain sixth following Telford win

ICE HOCKEY: SOLIHULL Barons remain sixth in the NIHL North 1 table following a timely 3-2 win against high-flying Telford.

The game had added spice to it following the dramatic ending to the last fixture between the two sides.

Barons’ netminder Daniel Brittle was thrown out of the game, resulting in the match being abandoned – to the frustration of fans from both teams.

Seeking revenge, Tigers made a strong start and pegged Barons in their own end for the majority of the opening 20 minutes.

Tigers were rewarded mid-way through the period when Scott McKenzie scored from Jason Silverthorn’s pass.

The remainder of the period would see Barons’ chances limited to a few breakouts, with relatively few sustained opportunities in the Tigers end.

Stubborn defence by the home side backed by a match-winning performance by Dangy Brittle ensured the sides were separated by a goal at the end of the opening period.

Barons started to play their own game at the start of the second as Marcus Maynard levelled the game within a minute of the restart.

A couple of soft penalties following this goal contained some of the Barons momentum, but once back to full strength the goal hunt continued for Solihull.

Andy Whitehouse put Solihull ahead at the game’s midpoint with a close range effort while Matt Maurice would make it 3-1 by the period end.

Richard Plant pulled a goal back with three minutes remaining to set up a tense finish, but Barons held strong in the closing minutes to register a confidence boosting win.

Barons are back on the ice again this weekend.

On Saturday they make thier way to Billingham to take on the Stars while on Sunday they welcome the Stars to Planet Ice Solihull.

Face-off 6pm.
