EDITOR’S COMMENT from this week’s Solihull Observer
Common sense has prevailed over abandoned proposals to push parts of Solihull borough into redrawn Parliamentary constituencies in Coventry and Birmingham.
Voters should feel part of the community for which they select their MP.
Arguably, it will be common sense too for MPs to ultimately reject the entire messy attempt to redraw the nation’s political map by 2022, as many predict will happen. The Tories wanted it but lack a commanding majority.
Equalising the numbers of voters between urban seats (traditionally Labour) and rural seats would seem reasonable, apolitically speaking.
But opposition parties have leveled accusations of gerrymandering by cutting MPs from 650 to 600.
It has certainly produced odd suggestions for West Midlands boundary changes.
