EDITOR'S COMMENT: Slow response from council leaders sees immigration tweets fall-out rumble on

EDITOR’S COMMENT from this week’s Solihull Observer

The fallout rumbles on over the extremist views on immigration and Muslims promoted on Twitter by two Conservative Solihull councillors – and council leaders partly have themselves to blame.

Several Tories at Tuesday’s council meeting rightly emphasised the borough’s diversity and tolerance, in supporting a Green party motion to re-assert the council’s position against all forms of discrimination. Some were no doubt also hoping to draw a line under the embarrassing and damaging saga.

But council leader Bob Sleigh had been far too slow to react, only announcing the suspension of councillor Margaret Bassett a week after we revealed the story, amidst a similar debacle with councllor Jeff Potts.

Let’s hope the council’s investigations are not protracted.
