Great-grandmother celebrates her 100th birthday

Solihull Editorial 13th Jun, 2017   0

A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER spent the day surrounded by family and friends in celebration of her 100th birthday.

Ivy Gladys Olds marked becoming a centenarian on Sunday with a weekend of celebrations – starting with a small party at her home in Shirley with the other residents at Millers Court.

On the day of her birthday, she was joined by family at West Warwickshire Tennis Club for a surprise party.

Before moving to the assisted living flat on Haslucks Green Road, Mrs Olds lived in Hall Green for 50 years with her husband Sid, who passed away 20 years ago.

Prior to this she worked as a truer for Hercules Cycles in Acocks Green throughout the 40s and 50s.

As a child, Ivy enjoyed playing tennis. Her daughter-in-law, Anna Olds, described her as very outgoing.

She added: “Everywhere she goes she leaves a mark on people.”

Last November, Ivy had a full hip replacement at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital – making her one of the oldest people to have the operation.

The 100-year-old is a mother of two and has recently returned from a trip to Spain, where she spent time with her daughter Susan as they celebrated her son-in-law’s 70th birthday.

Ivy travelled on her own to Spain up until she was 94 years of age and even travelled to Saint Lucia.

The centenarian also has four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren – whom she thoroughly enjoys spending time with.

Anna said: “She is very positive – she just gets on with things.”
