Christian Aid celebrate 60 years in Solihull

CELEBRATIONS were the order of the day when Knowle United Reformed Church raised a cuppa in honour of 60 years of Christian Aid.

The Station Road church held a coffee morning where Christian Aid’s regional director John Cooper spoke about what work it does.

Margaret Bates, one of the local collectors, remembers collecting for Christian Aid in the beginning and says there are many similarities to the present.

For instance, the name Christian Aid had to be explained to people and the early collecting was to help post-war refugees.




There has been little change over 60 years because the need is still there and this year’s Refugee theme for Christian Aid Week, which runs from May 14 to 20.

The present displacement of people in the world is more than at the end of the second World War.


Christian Aid is one of the 13 charities in the Disaster Emergencies Committee.
