Special needs Solihull pupils at Hazel Oak School release CD ahead of Christmas

Solihull Editorial 1st Dec, 2016   0

SOLIHULL schoolchildren are hoping to top the charts with the release of a CD.

The pupils from Hazel Oak School in Shirley, all of whom have learning difficulties, have created, recorded and marketed the CD based on their learning on Viking and Anglo-Saxon invaders and settlers.

The disc features songs – including one penned by the students – an interview with a viking, soundscapes and readings of stories they have written.

James Summerfield, year 6 teacher in charge of the challenge, said: “This term we have been learning about invaders and settlers and this CD has given them a chance to consolidate what they know.

“Each term we set a challenge for the children – in the past they’ve organised garden parties and next term we’re having a fashion show.

“We want to give them life-ready skills so they can have independence and saviness and this CD has meant they are doing things for themselves as well as working in teams.

“We’re really excited to release the CD and hope it is a success, as any money we make will be invested into our next challenge.”

The CD is available to buy for £5 at the school Christmas fair tonight (Thursday).

They can also be ordered by emailing [email protected] and by visiting www.creativityinschools.moonfruit.com and clicking on the Hazel Oak School logo.
