THE ZOMBIE blockbuster featuring Shirley’s Powergen building is hitting the big screen today (Friday).

The Girl With All The Gifts, an apocalyptic drama about a deadly fungal infection which wipes out humanity, stars the biggest names in Hollywood – including Glenn Close, Gemma Arteton and Peaky Blinder’s Paddy Considine.

The film crew descended on the former Powergen site – which closed its doors over 20 years ago – to shoot the £4.5 million film in June last year.

Filming took place on the site’s grounds – following asbestos concerns inside the building – which were transformed to replicate a military base where Dr Caroline Caldwell (played by Glenn Close) could find a cure to fight the flesh-eating disease.

Hollywood stars, Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton and Paddy Considine descended on Powergen’s site in June last year.

Rusty cars, debris and military machinery were also used to decorated the site to add to the authenticity.

The film will be screened at a long-list of cinemas across Birmingham.

There will also be an opportunity for zombie enthusiasts to meet the screenwriter Mike Carey at the Birmingham Literary Festival on October 1 at the Library of Birmingham.
