A LUCKY OBSERVER reader and her daughter had a night to remember at Damson Park on Wednesday as Birmingham City Ladies faced Arsenal in their latest WSL game.

Amelia Thompson was picked out as the winner for our popular mascot competition, meaning she led out the Blues team ahead of what turned out to be a goalless draw against the London-based giants.

The Valley Primary School student was nominated by her mum to be mascot for the televised game after entering our competition.

Mum Tracey Steele said: “The look on her face when she stepped out on the pitch was just amazing.

“Amelia was especially happy when she found out she was on TV – as you’d expect she’s already told her friends about her TV appearance.

“Thank you so much to The Observer and Eze Group for making this happen – the whole family had a wonderful evening.”

Amelia’s family were also able to cheer her on as she led the players out – Eze Group granted the family three hospitality tickets, including a pre-match meal.

Other members of the family supporting her were Amelia’s dad, Ian Thompson, and grandad, Ernie Steele.

Eze Group, who are BCLFC main shirt sponsors, is aiming to use their link with the club to encourage more young girls to take part in active sport.

Dominic O’Reilly, ceo of Eze Group, said: “We’re so pleased Amelia and her family enjoyed their evening watching Blues Ladies.

“To have such a young fan supporting Blues Ladies just shows how inspiring the players can be to young girls.

“We are more than happy to reward young girls who take part and show great interest in sport, it was a pleasure for us to treat Amelia to this.”
