Solihull ex-soldier tackles London Marathon in aid of Heart of England Mencap

IT’S almost time for ex-army captain Will Carr to take on the London Marathon to raise money for Heart of England Mencap.

The former soldier, from Dorridge, who returned from a seven month tour in Afghanistan in 2011, hopes to raise more than £1,500 for the Warwickshire-based charity. It’s a cause close to his heart; Heart of England Mencap supports local people with learning disabilities, including Will’s girlfriend’s sister.

Will, 29, is now a Trainee Solicitor for Wright Hassall, based in Leamington.

And thanks to his employer, he’s already well on the way to raising his £1,500 fundraising target. Wright Hassall has pledged a third of the money, donating £500 to Will’s fundraising appeal – but he still needs more support.

“I’m hugely grateful to Wright Hassall and to everyone else who has sponsored me already,” Will said.

“This will be the first time I’ve taken on a full marathon and it’s certainly going to be a challenge, but I’m confident the amazing atmosphere in London on the day – and the fact I’m raising money for a charity I know first-hand does truly amazing things, will keep me going for the 26 miles.”

Cath Errington, Fundraising Manager for HofE Mencap, added: “We really want to thank Will for his support. A sum like £1,500 really does make a big difference to a charity like ours and it will directly benefit our customers, going towards equipment and activities that help people with disabilities to live their lives to the fullest.”

Wright Hassall Partner and Head of Corporate, Robert Lee, said: “The Wright Hassall Charitable Trust is delighted to be supporting Will in this challenge. 2016 is the firm’s 170th anniversary year and we are really proud that we have the opportunity to support Heart of England Mencap, a charity which supports families across Warwickshire.”
