ALWAYS STAY together, support each other and enjoy the fresh summer air.

That’s the secret to a long, successful and happy marriage according to Marjorie and Terry Lownes who celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday (March 31).

The loving couple met 1954 at an ice rink in Birmingham after being set-up by a pair of friends.

Fortunately, Terry, aged 84 – known as Ted – plucked up the courage to ask Marjorie on a second date and they haven’t looked back since.

After living in Solihull all her life 79-year-old Marjorie vividly remembers purchasing their first house for just £1,850 in Olton – a sum which most people now earn in a matter of weeks.

Speaking to The Observer, Marj said: “We’ve always been together and have never done stuff apart.

“Enjoying each others company and always being there for each other are the best tips I can give to people seeking a long and successful marriage.”

Marj and Ted are proud parents to their three children – daughters Rhiannon and Claire and son, Michael – and grandparents to Alex, Giles and James.

The couple celebrated their landmark anniversary with a week away at a cottage in Somerset with their loving family.

Her Majesty the Queen even sent a letter of congratulations to the happy couple, saying that she’s pleased to know that Marj and Ted were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

Marj added: “We met on a blind date at an ice rink and Ted’s friend mentioned introducing both of us so I went along with it.

“We used to love our caravan and always took it out during the summer months to Scotland, Cornwall and Devon.

“Lighting up the barbecue and spending time with our parents, children and family with our caravan are the memories that stick out most for me.”

Daughter Rhiannon said: “I can speak for all of three of us when I say we are very proud of our parents.

“They both worked hard to give us all the best they could and to ensure we all had every opportunity in life.

“In recent years they have both had health challenges but that hasn’t stopped them from going out and having a good time.

“Our trip to Somerset helped us reminisce about many family holidays we all enjoyed in the past.”
