HE MAY have lost his single match last Friday, but Solihull’s Dan Evans ended up on the winning team as Great Britain beat Japan in the First Round of the Davis Cup.
Evans lost in straight sets to world number six Kei Nishikori 6-3 7-5 7-6 (7-3) on home soil in Birmingham but on the same day Andy Murray beat Taro Daniel 6-1 6-3 6-1 to level it up at 1-1 after the opening day.
The Murray brothers (Andy and Jamie ) maintained their undefeated record in the Davis Cup as a pairing and handed their GB Davis Cup team a vital advantage heading into Sunday’s singles.
The brothers, having first teamed-up in the quarter-final victory over France last summer, added to their previous four victories to prevail 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 against the Japanese duo.
And it was left to Andy put in a heroic effort to send the GB into the quarter-finals courtesy of an enthralling five-hour marathon triumph over Kei Nishikori on Sunday.
The victory also seals Britain’s place in the Davis Cup World Cup for 2017.
