Ways to save green spaces at heart of essay competition

YOUNGSTERS are being called on to put pen to paper and say how they would save green spaces.

Saqib Bhatti, Meriden and Solihull East MP, has launched an essay competition aimed at those aged 11 to 15 to write about saving the environment and greenspaces and how they would do it.

The competition invites young people to write an essay addressed to their future selves, setting out how they would protect nature and green spaces in Solihull.

By encouraging students to imagine the Meriden and Solihull East they want to inherit, Bhatti hopes to spark thoughtful conversations about stewardship, responsibility, and long-term thinking.

Young people are already passionate about environmental issues, from climate change to wildlife protection.

Mr Bhatti said this competition gives that passion a local focus, encouraging them to think about the fields, footpaths, parks, and hedgerows they know and love.

The Conservative MP said: “I have always been clear that I will stand up for our countryside and protect the greenbelt that defines our area. That commitment matters now more than ever.

“Across the country, ambitious housebuilding targets and uncertainty in the planning system are placing increasing strain on green spaces that should remain protected.

“Protecting our countryside, however, is not just about today’s planning challenges. It is also about fairness to future generations. Our children and grandchildren deserve the same access to nature, clean air, and open spaces that many of us grew up with.”

The deadline for submissions is April 4.

All entries should be emailed to [email protected].
