A PAIR of optical assistants have highlighted the benefits of apprenticeships.

Cody Delaney and Rhea Yates, who work at Specsavers stores in Castle Vale and Chelmsley Wood, are completing the optical assistant apprenticeship course to gain a Cert 3 qualification in 18 months’ time.

The pair are sharing their journey’s so far to mark National Apprenticeship Week.

Cody, aged 18, started her apprenticeship in October with the team at Specsavers Castle Vale and chose to join the scheme in order to receive practical learning alongside working.

She said: “I’d definitely recommend an apprenticeship.

“I really enjoy learning in a working environment and my end goal is to become an optometrist one day, so the apprenticeship scheme is a brilliant first step.”

And 37-year-old Rhea, who works at Specsavers Chelmsley Wood, opted to complete her apprenticeship to build essential knowledge and skills alongside her day-to-day role in-store.

She said: “I enjoy my apprenticeship because I’m able to earn a wage while learning and developing my skills alongside my teammates.

“The qualification I’ll gain will open up more opportunities for the future and help me progress my career.”
