A SOLIHULL litter picking volunteer has been recognised for her outstanding work protecting the environment and inspiring her community.

Ruth Meredith, a volunteer for the Clean and Green litter picking group, won the BBC Make a Difference Green Award.

The award celebrates individuals and groups who make their communities more environmentally friendly and improve local public spaces.

Ruth was nominated by another member of the Clean and Green litter picking group in North Solihull in recognition of her remarkable efforts as a volunteer with the group.

Motivated by her love for the outdoors and a desire to keep the environment safe and clean, Ruth took her passion a step further by joining Veolia Solihull as a street cleansing operative.

The new role has enabled her to continue making a difference on a larger scale by looking after 10 miles of road around the town centre, while supporting the Council’s efforts to keep the borough clean and safe for everyone.

Sue Cummine, senior contract manager at Veolia Solihull, said: “We are incredibly proud of Ruth’s achievement and delighted that her volunteer work has been recognised with this award.

“She leads by example, and we’re happy that Ruth took her passion and dedication one step further by making it her career and joining us as we work with Solihull Council to deliver street cleansing, grounds maintenance, and recycling and waste collections.

“Ruth is a true ambassador for both Veolia and the people of Solihull, and this award is a well-deserved recognition of her extraordinary efforts.”
