A TASKFORCE which tackles illegal street racing across the region has been handed a national award.

Operation Hercules officers scooped a prestigious national award for innovation and excellence at the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) Roads Policing Conference in Manchester for their pioneering approach, which includes the enforcement of a powerful High Court injunction against street racing.

Following the award, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster, has hailed the ground-breaking work the team carry out.

Mr Foster has repeatedly joined the team on patrol to witness their work first-hand, praised their dedication to combating the dangerous driving that puts lives at risk. He has also contributed £40,000 towards the launch of Operation Hercules, funding essential officer training, vehicle maintenance and other operational costs.

Mr Foster, said: “Preventing and tackling crime and anti-social behaviour on our roads, is a top priority for me. Operation Hercules, that targets illegal street racing, is a powerful example of partnership in action – protecting our communities, saving lives, and holding reckless drivers to account.

“I have seen first-hand, the commitment, dedication and professionalism of the Op Hercules team, and this national recognition of their commendable achievements, is richly and rightly deserved.”
