A CENTENARIAN’S room was filled with birthday cards thanks to kind-hearted Silhillians.

Following an appeal by The Priory Lily Watts received an incredible 257 cards from community members, wishing her a very happy 106th birthday.

Lily said: “I was absolutely thrilled by the number of birthday wishes I received through the post. Thank you so much to everyone who sent a card and to those who helped arrange it.

“I was really shocked and happy – I couldn’t believe where they had all come from.”

Staff at the home decorated her room with all the cards, including one from the King, so she could read them all in her own time.

The Priory will be planting a rose in their gardens to sit under Lily’s bedroom window to bloom every year.

Home manager Cheryl Harbourne said: “Lily was overwhelmingly happy by the number of cards she received, she felt very special. We’re all so grateful to everyone who sent a card, 257 is more than we imagined and it is a fantastic display of our community’s kindness.”
