CREATIVE women have hand-crafted more than 1,500 poppies to adorn Meriden’s war memorial.
Members of the Meriden WI have knitted, crocheted, painted and dried plant seed heads from gardens to create the cascade for Armistice Day (November 11).
The group was inspired to create the installation as a nod to its beginnings and to mark its rejuvenation.
Meriden Wi was founded in 1918 to support rural women working independently while the First World War continued.
Della Mannix, Meriden WI secretary, said: “By January 2020, the group was struggling due to a lack of members and unfilled committee roles, leading to a sense of despondency. A call for new members was posted on Facebook to revitalize the group and prevent its closure.
“Today, Meriden WI has grown to 35 members and includes a lunch club, walking group, book club, and darts team, alongside the monthly meetings at Meriden Village Hall.
“To commemorate this transformation, and considering that the war led to the creation of Meriden WI, we decided to mark Remembrance Day five years after our rejuvenation.”
