ASPIRING scientists at Solihull Sixth Form College joined the School of Wizardry this term for a spooky potions lesson.

Pupils on the Practical Science and Forensic Investigation enrichment participated in a microscale practical, dressed in their wizarding robes (lab coats) and wizard hats and some in fancy dress for Halloween.

During the hour-long session, pupils used a range of chemicals and mixing them with ‘magical’ reactants to see what happened and they were invited to observe and record the chemical changes.

Chemistry and applied science assistant curriculum leader Laura Whitby said: “The Practical Science and Forensic Investigation enrichment is a fantastic opportunity for learners to participate in some hands-on science, regardless of whether they are doing a science-based A-Level or BTEC course.

“In this enrichment, the emphasis is on developing lab skills, as well as observation and communications skills and cultivating in our young people a life-long appreciation for science.

“In this particular session, students got into the spirit of Halloween with some fabulous fancy dress.”
