Bid to fill centenarian's room with birthday cards

KIND-HEARTED residents are being called on to help fill a Solihull woman’s room with birthday cards.

Lily Watts, will celebrate her 106th birthday on October 30 and carers at The Priory Bupa Care Home are hoping to decorate her room messages from the community.

Lily was born in Birmingham and is one of five children.

She always rode her bicycle to work and loved the independence it gave her.

Lily met her husband, Jack, whilst working at Morris Commercial.

At the start of their relationship, Jack was called up for war duties, but the couple stayed connected whilst he was away by sending love letters by post.

Once the war was over, Jack returned home and proposed to Lily.

They went on to marry and have two children, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

The couple enjoyed caravanning holidays and 20 years of retirement together.

When asked about her secret to a long life, she said: “no matter what, just keep going.”

Lily has been a resident at The Priory since 2003, she enjoys knitting and sewing.

Cheryl Harbourne, home manager, said: “We want to make Lily’s birthday an incredibly special day – we are all very excited to celebrate with her.

“We are looking forward to seeing what cards our local community send and hope to show Lily just how truly special and loved she is.”

Anyone who wants to send a card to Lily, should address it to The Priory Bupa Care Home, 1 Shelly Crescent, Monkspath, Shirley, B90 4XA.
