The world as we know it is more uncertain with President Trump in the Oval Office. The United States are applying approaches to foreign policy, international security and the global economy which pose huge challenges for us here in the UK.
President Trump’s decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff to all foreign cars imported to the US is deeply concerning for us. Our constituency, which is the home of Jaguar Land Rover, and the wider West Midlands area is the beating heart of the UK’s vehicle manufacturing industry. Indeed, 2.2 per cent of all workers in the West Midlands are employed in the sector. These tariffs could therefore have a disproportionate impact us in the West Midlands region and could have significant consequences for my constituents.
As such, given the clear importance of the vehicle manufacturing sector to the UK economy, I have written to the Business Secretary to seek a meeting to discuss how he will navigate the complex geopolitical landscape and protect the West Midlands from the impact of Trump’s tariffs.
As well as having the privilege of serving as the MP for Meriden and Solihull East, I also hold the post of Shadow Minister of State for Culture, Media and Sport. This means I am the opposition spokesperson for charities. That is why it was doubly delightful to visit Newlands Bishop Farm in Catherine De Barnes just last week.
Newlands Bishop Farm is part of The Family Care Trust which was set up 25 years ago to support people with mental health conditions, learning disabilities and physical disabilities, along with their careers and relatives.
The site has expanded over the last 20 years to include a modern woodwork barn, several maintained gardens, sports groups, horticulture, woodland management, landscaping and college courses to take part in. Having access to a wide variety of activities enables individuals attending the farm to develop their skills and being able to apply them across many different tasks.
I would like to thank Dan and the team over at the farm for the kind invitation, it’s always a joy to be invited to Newlands Bishop Farm, the pure joy and creativity of the environment they have created is certainly something to behold.
The Chancellor’s increase in National Insurance Contributions (NICs) is anticipated to have a significant negative impact on charities, potentially leading to staff reductions, salary cuts, and service closures. As opposition spokesman for charities, I will continue to monitor the impact of the NICs increases on the sector.
Community resources like the farm are vital, and it is why I take so much pride in the Shadow Ministerial role I hold, because charities like this must be protected. I look forward to seeing the farm continue to grow and develop over the years to come and I am already looking forward to my next visit.
