MATT Taylor wants Solihull Moors to ‘get back to basics’ after starting his reign at Damson Park with a 2-0 home defeat against Halifax Town.

Taylor replaced Andy Whing as Moors head coach following the latter’s sudden departure to League Two side Barrow.

However, Taylor made a losing start as Andrew Oluwabori and Owen Bray struck to inflict a third straight defeat on Moors.

The result leaves Solihull ninth in the National League table, one point outside of the play-off places.

Taylor said: “Football is a game of margins, we kept pushing in the first half, we probably should have scored four goals, there were lots of positives.

“The players are disappointed but there’s a lot I can take away from it, it’s a little bit of getting back to basics because they’re exceptional footballers.

“The squad is slightly lighter than we would want but that’s the same for every team at every level of football, there’s a lot of work to do.

“It’s just that cutting edge at the top of the pitch, for all the endeavour and hard work we showed, we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

“There’s lots for me to go away and ponder on, I needed to get a really good, up-close look at the players and I’ve done that.

“If we’re going to get back to winning ways, there’ll be certain things that need to change, you want to put your stamp on the team.

“I’ve got certain ideas I want to implement, it’s a case of getting those ideas into the players as quickly as possible.”

Moors almost made the perfect start as Jack Stevens saw two efforts blocked in the box before Alex Whitmore blazed a third attempt over the crossbar.

However, Halifax broke the deadlock after just three minutes as Moors failed to clear their lines and Oluwabori volleyed in a low cross from the right from 12-yards out.

Solihull went close just past the half-hour mark as Sam Johnson kept out Stevens’ powerful effort.

However, Halifax doubled their lead on 55 minutes when Bray curled a shot into the bottom right corner from 20-yards out following a clever flick from Luca Thomas.

Moors looked to reduced the deficit as Fletcher Holman scooped a shot well over the crossbar.

The closest Moors came to a goal saw Olly Tipton drill a volley against the base of the post from just outside the penalty area.

Solihull are next in action against Wealdstone on Saturday, February 1 with kick-off at 3pm at Grosvenor Vale.
