BUDDING politicians visited the Houses of Parliament to get a peek into life as an MP.

Balsall Common Primary School Academy’s School Councillors visited the Houses of Parliament to find out more about the roles of MPs and develop their knowledge on Parliament and its history.

The day began with a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament, where the pupils explored the Palace of Westminster and went inside the House of Lords, gaining insights into the legislative process and the history of British democracy.

The Councillors, and staff, were captivated by the grandeur of Westminster Hall and the rich traditions that underpin parliamentary proceedings.

Following the tour, the group quizzed Meriden and Solihull East MP, Saqib Bhatti, on topics from the challenges of decision-making to ways young people can contribute to their communities.

The highlight of the visit was a special trip to Number 10 Downing Street.

The pupils were thrilled to stand outside the iconic black door, a symbol of British leadership. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity provided a tangible connection to the nation’s leadership and governance.

Manpreet Bains, assistant headteacher and School Council lead, said: “This visit was an incredible experience for our 24 School Councillors.

“It not only deepened their understanding of how our country is governed but also encouraged them to think critically about the importance of leadership, representation, and active citizenship.

“They returned full of ideas and enthusiasm, ready to continue making a positive impact within our school and community.”
