“WE FEEL a little bit of peace has come back into our lives” – those are the words of Charlie Jay’s family after The Shack in Cheswick Green was saved.
Cheswick Green Parish Council had set out a plan to replace the shelter following an inspection carried out by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) which deemed it ‘a high-risk structure’.
The Shack has been dedicated to Charlie who died seven years ago and has been dubbed ‘Carrot Shack’ by some in the village
However, at a Full Parish Council meeting members voted to retain the gazebo – known as The Shack – in the park.
Councillor Mick Swain, chairman of Cheswick Green Parish Council, said: “The Parish Council took the decision to retain the gazebo/shack at their meeting.
“Whether the structure is repaired or replaced has yet to be determined.”
Charlie’s mum, Lesley Jay told The Observer: “We are so grateful, we feel a little bit of peace has come back into our lives after the last two horrible weeks of torment.
“Our little bit of Charlie we have left, is going to keep going strong.
“Huge thanks to everyone.”
After the Parish Council’s plans to remove The Shack were revealed an online petition was set up calling for it to be saved from removal.
It garnered more than 700 signatures in 48 hours and since then it has rocketed to more than 1,000 supporting the cause.
Over the years The Shack has served not just as a symbol of remembrance for Charlie, but also as a space for community gatherings and unity.
Lesley said: “We are waiting to hear on their decision if we can set up a sub committee, which will get quotes on what a repair would be – which bizarrely hasn’t even been done, or replacing the Shack.
“We have been overwhelmed by the support and love we have felt from so many people in our community, the local shops for putting posters up, the amazing lady who started the online petition, with over a 1,000 signed not an opinion to be ignored and clearly tells you what the community want, and to those who came to the Parish Council meeting with us.”
