TREES and hedgerows have been planted across the borough to mark National Tree Week.
Solihull Council’s Planting Our Future team planted several celebration trees in Malvern Park.
This included a Norway Purple Maple tree sponsored by the St Alphege Rotary Club, in support of World Polio Day and the Rotary Club’s continued commitment to ending polio.
This tree was planted alongside the 1,000 purple crocus bulbs planted by the team and St Alphege Rotary in the park last month.
The team also dug deep alongside volunteers from Lloyds Bank, who came back to help for a second year, to plant hedgerows at Solihull Riding Club.
This year’s National Tree Week took place from November 23 until December 1 and is the UK’s largest tree celebration, the week brings everyone together to mark the start of the winter tree-planting season.
Councillor Ken Hawkins, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “This year, we’re celebrated National Tree Week by planting celebration trees in one of our Green Flag accredited parks, as well as planting more hedgerows at Solihull Riding Club to encourage biodiversity.
“We’ve reached a significant milestone in our Planting Our Future programme this year with over 100,000 trees planted since 2020 – a fantastic achievement that has earned Solihull its ‘Tree City of the World’ status for a third consecutive year.
“The celebration trees that have been planted this week bring us one step closer to reaching our goal of planting 250,000 trees by 2030. Congratulations to the Planting Our Future team and the many partners, volunteers and local tree-lovers that have made this possible – keep up the good work!”
