Mat Jackson gearing for BTCC finale

HENLEY-in-Arden race ace Mat Jackson heads to the Airwaves Racing team’s home track of Brands Hatch this weekend for the British Touring Car Championship season finale on the GP loop at the Kent circuit, writes Andy Parsons.

Jackson goes with his sights set on snatching third place in the drivers’ championship away from Honda Yuasa’s Gordon Shedden, although he also knows he will come under immense pressure from outgoing champion Andrew Jordan in the Pirtek Honda, who lies just four points behind him in the standings, but will also be keen to put on a good show for all the team’s local fans and provide a fitting end to the team’s association with Airwaves.

Jackson said: “It’s business as usual for us this weekend, we can only go to Brands and do the best that we can. I need to score as many points as I can and hope that that is enough to jump Gordon, but really it is in his hands – you never know what can happen in the BTCC!

“We did well last time out at Silverstone and I’m aiming for the top step again this weekend. Hopefully that will be enough to get the best result for myself and the team and also to give Airwaves Racing the send-off it deserves. It’s been great to part of such a successful team with Airwaves on board and fingers crossed we can celebrate that in style with another trip to the top step.

“To have reached the last round with 100 per cent of laps completed with competition as fierce as it’s been this season is a mega achievement. It is a great testament to the whole team who have done a fantastic job of the car preparation, which has been faultless.”

The overall drivers’ title is between ebay Motors’ Colin Turkington in the BMW and Jason Plato in the KX Clubcard Fuelsave MG6, with Turkington holding a 50-point advantage, although the season finale always seems to bring out the best and worst in some drivers who feel they may have the odd score to settle, so an action-packed Sunday is in prospect.
