POWERLIFTING: LISA Bulcock is still scratching her head wondering how she has become European Powerlifting champion after taking up the sport just TEN months ago.

The 27-year-old, from Earlswood, only took up powerlifting last September after initially training for a low-key body building competition at her local club.

After doing some basic weight training, Lisa found her hidden talent and soon she was in contact with elite performance coach Nicola Vaughan-Ellis, has been the head coach of the Great Britain squad at no fewer than four Olympic Games.

Under the stewardship of her new coach, the former St Peter’s Catholic School pupil went from strength to strength and before she knew it she was appearing on the international stage at the European Championships in Stoke-on-Trent earlier this month.

“It’s all been a bit crazy but I’m loving every minute,” Lisa told the Observer. “I only gave it a go a few months ago and now I’m European Champion.

“I was put in touch with Nicola, we had a few sessions and it’s taken off from there really.

“I took park in a fun competition in Solihull in December and my first competitive event was the European qualifiers a month later.

“I was so nervous because I didn’t know how I would cope throughout the day because you have to be psyched up for certain events and then calm and concentrated for others.”

Lisa breezed through qualifying to progress to the finals which included lifting, a squatting, bench pressing and deadlifting and she was crowned winner following a combined weight total of 370kg, which was over four times her bodyweight.

“It was nerve-racking to beging with but once you get the first squat out of the way it’s fine.

“I was in the lead by 50kg in comparison to the other competitors in my category! It felt amazing to win and I was very emotional to be fair. I haven’t been doing powerlifting that long so I ran to my mum and dad and cried!

“They are so proud of what I’ve done and my sister is chuffed to bits too, so are my friends. It was a special moment.”

There will be no time for rest for Lisa as she now begins preparations for the World Powerlifting Championships in both Russia and Louisiana, and she also as her eyes set on the UK title before then too.

“I’ve already qualififed for both events and I’ve got my eye on the World Record too which I know I can achieve,” Lisa added.

“The only problem I have is funding. I have to fund competitions, flights, accomodation etc so hopefully there are some people out there who would be willing to help.”
