RISING star of Shirley Tae Kwon-Do Club Claire Murphy is celebrating after being crowned Welsh National Champion.

Murphy took up the martial art having enrolled her son at the club just under two years ago and after giving it a try she has never looked back.

Her latest success saw her win Gold in the ladies sparring and she also took home Bronze in the pattern events at the Welsh Championships in Cardiff.

Murphy trains under the expert guidance of international instructor and three-time World Champion Steve Merricks.

“Claire is an example that by enrolling her son and taking those initial first steps herself, she has unlocked a real potential that she probably at first didn’t realise existed,” said Merricks.

“As an instructor it’s fantastic to see her going from strength to strength and to win in both sparring & patterns events at a national tournament with over 800 competitors is extremely impressive and thoroughly deserved.”

Shirley Tae kwon-Do are always looking for more women and children to join the club and are hoping to attract more interest by holding a free open training session for all ages for anyone who would like to get a taste of what Tae Kwon-Do is all about.
