PEDAL POWER efforts from Solihull Council Chief Executive, Nick Page, helped to unveil a wheelchair bike at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre.
Mr Page cycled 100 miles on a static bike in Touchwood shopping centre back in February – and raised £3,000 in the process.
The money raised help provide over half of the amount required to purchase the new bike – the remaining £2,000 was donated by Headway West Midlands, a brain injury charity.
Solihull Council has been working with Cycling Projects over the last 18 months to establish the Solihull Wheels for All project.
The project started due to the high demand for cycling sessions that would be safe, ideal for complete beginners as well as provide adapted bikes that would enable people with a disability to take part.
Working in partnership with Parkview Day Centre, Bacons End Day Centre and Headway West Midlands – service users have gained valuable confidence, independence and self-esteem.
The new wheelchair bike was identified as a priority for the project as it is able to transport wheelchair users giving them the same benefits as their peers.
The Mayor of Solihull, Coun Glenis Slater, attended the unveiling of the bike and said: “Thanks to the efforts of Nick and Headway, residents of the borough with disabilities will have a great opportunity to try out the new cycling equipment.
“The Wheels for All project has been doing excellent work and the new equipment will help them a great deal.
“It gives those with disabilities the chance to experience the enjoyment of a bike ride.”
