Sparkbrook man arrested on Syria terrorism charges

A 37-YEAR-OLD man from Sparkbrook, Birmingham has been arrested on suspicion of engaging in terrorism in Syria.

He was detained at Birmingham Airport by officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit at approximately 3pm today (Thursday 11 June) after arriving on a flight from Istanbul.

The arrest was pre-planned and intelligence-led. There was no risk to the safety of the flight.

Officers made the arrest under PACE legislation meaning they have a maximum of 36 hours to question the suspect before charging, releasing, bailing or applying to a court for a warrant of further detention.
