OVER a hundred guests gathered at Solihull’s Marie Curie hospice to celebrate life and friendship at a party hosted by hospice resident Joan Eaton.

Joan, who is living with terminal cancer, invited friends, family, staff and volunteers to the hospice to help raise funds to support the charity’s work.

Her guests enjoyed food, drink, music, games and a raffle, which was all organised by her daughters Chloe and Joanna and her friend, Jenny.

Joan’s daughter Joanna, who works at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, said: “Mum, my sister Chloe and I wanted to throw a party so mum could see all her friends.

“When we came to the hospice, we thought it would be a good idea to have it there and combine some fundraising to thank all the staff that have been so good to us.

“Mum came to the hospice while I was on my honeymoon – it was a real shock.

“When we got home I didn’t know what to expect but it is so different to how I pictured it, it is really nice. The doctors were so kind. They took the time to explain everything to Chloe and I and we always felt we could approach them with any questions.

“The staff here have been so helpful in letting us hold the party, they really can’t do enough to help us, they have been so supportive. The day was such a lovely celebration and we’ve got some beautiful memories that will stay with us forever.”

Liz Cottier, Hospice Manager at Marie Curie, added: “We are very grateful to Joan, Chloe and Joanna for deciding to raise funds for Marie Curie. It will all go towards helping us care for people with a terminal illness and provide support for their loved ones.

“At the hospice our aim is to help people to live well and enjoy the time they have with their families. So when Joan said she wanted to throw a party, we were only too happy to help. It was a great day for Joan and her friends.

“I’m delighted that so many people came, some of which had never been to a hospice before.

“People often have a negative picture in their head of what the hospice will be like so are really surprised when they get here and see so much life, love and friendship. ”
