Funeral of plane crash couple takes place Friday

Solihull Editorial 4th Feb, 2015 Updated: 21st Oct, 2016   0

THE FUNERAL of former Knowle man Lewis Tonkinson and his wife Sally who lost their lives in a plane crash will take place tomorrow (Friday, February 6).

The Alcester couple were killed when the light aircraft they were travelling in came down near Popham airfield in Hampshire on January 3.

They had been married just over a year and there is speculation that Mr Lewis, who had just celebrated turning 50 on New Year’s Day, had been attempting an emergency landing at the airfield after weather conditions deteriorated.

Their son George was taken to Southampton General Hospital with life threatening injuries but is now believed to be recovering well with family members.

The Air Accident Investigation Branch is looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash and initial enquiries show the plane took off from Bembridge on the Isle of Wight.

In total 25 firefighters were sent to the scene along with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, three ambulances, three rapid response cars and an ambulance doctor.

The pair will be remembered in a joint service at Redditch Crematorium from 12.30pm.

Family members have asked for no flowers, and have instead requested donations to be made to the Air Ambulance, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and PICU at Southampton General Hospital.

The services will be conducted by Thomas Brothers Funeral Directors and donations can be made by calling them on 01527 547 777.
