A LOCAL celebrity visited a Solihull opticians on World Book Day to carry out book signings.

Blind Dave Heeley visited Specsavers on the High Street to sign copies of his brand new book ‘From Light to Dark’ which covers his amazing story of how, despite losing his sight at just ten-years-old, he’s accomplished a range of challenges and raised £3 million for charity.

To support the event, staff at the store were busy raising funds for Guide Dogs, one of Dave’s favourite charities, by offering free specs MOTs (cleaning and adjustments) in return for donations.

‘What better way to mark World Book Day than with such a phenomenal local hero, who’s now on track to become a top author,’ says Brad Parkes, store director Specsavers Solihull.

Dave Heeley is the first and only blind person in the world to have completed the ultimate endurance challenge of seven marathons in seven days on seven continents.

In 2011 he also became the first and only person to have completed  John’ O’ Groats  to Lands End with a difference – 10 marathons in 10 days and 100’s of miles of cycling.

Guide Dogs provides mobility and freedom to blind and partially sighted people.

They also campaign for the rights of people with visual impairment, educate the public about eye care and fund eye disease research. Visit http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/
